Star Trek -1
Ok, when a franchise resorts to prequels, it may very well be the last sign of total creative stagnation, but I gotta admit, this trailer fires me up.

It leaves me cold. I almost used some internet rage on it last night, but them my other passion (baseball) made me even angrier.

Sigh.

Somehow, I'm not surprised Bhagwan!

You're a purist; I get that.

I am too within certain domains, but Star Trek lost any ability to inspire that in me a long, long (long) time ago, so now i can just get into what looks like a rollicking good action/adventure that might even evoke a few shreds of empathy with the old, old star trek--but that won't be expected or required.

I do actually agree with Westfahl's premise (linked in the post) that once authors start going back to prequel's, the jig is up. And by that (or any) standard, Star Trek's jig was up before many potential viewers of this film were even born.

It's not even the part of me that loves Star Trek. The franchise jumped its futuristic shark a very long time ago, as you have noted.

The movie looks bad. really bad. Transformers bad. Independence day/Armageddon bad. Whatever the hell the third Star Wars prequel was named bad.

And such a film would do a lot more damage than another "Shinzon" or "perfect moment," not just to Star Trek, but to Sci-fi franchises in general.

Because if this trend of "put a pretty dress on a dog turd, treat it nice, and then expect your friends to buy it drinks while you go out for a smoke" continues, no truly original and watch-worthy movies will get made at all.

Why bother, really? All of the cinematic train-wrecks above grossed in excess of 300 Million dollars. Clearly the dress is working for someone.

Just not me.

Ok... maybe I'm one of those dress loving ... uh... whatever we are.

It doesn't *look* Transformers bad to me. Or Independence Day bad. Or Armageddon bad. It looks kinda fun! But you may be right, because I believe I enjoyed the transformers trailer. And the independence day trailer. I don't actually remember the armageddon trailer... but clearly I'm a sucker, so maybe I enjoyed that, too.

(For the record, Transformers made we want to throw heavy objects at my expensive television. Independence day had a pretty good opening but fell apart early enough that I wanted to leave the theater. Armageddon just made me laugh in an Attack of the Killer Tomatos kind of way.)

The fire burns within me, and I'm actually old guard. I remember watching the original series every week as it first aired. I'm willing to go with it, particularly if the overall movie turns out as good as it looks.
